How to become a SEBI Registered Research Analyst (2026): a step-by-step guide
Want to publish stock research or give buy/sell/hold calls legally in India? You need to be a SEBI Registered Research Analyst (RA). Here's the full, plain-English path — eligibility, NISM Series XV, qualification, deposit, fees, documents and the Form A → RAASB → SEBI process — with the exact numbers.
Do you even need RA registration?
Yes, if you provide "research services" for a fee or business — issuing research reports/analysis, or making buy/sell/hold recommendations, price targets or opinions on securities that are listed or proposed to be listed. You cannot act as, or call yourself, a "research analyst" without SEBI registration. Giving stock tips on YouTube/Telegram for money without registration is exactly what SEBI penalises.
Not sure if you're an RA or an Investment Adviser? In short: an RA gives impersonal, one-to-many recommendations; personalised advice tailored to a client's profile is Investment Adviser territory (a separate registration). Ask RA Mitra for the exact boundary.
The 6 steps at a glance
Step 1 — Eligibility & who can apply
You may register as an individual, a sole proprietor (as an independent research analyst, meeting the individual conditions), a partnership firm, an LLP, or a body corporate/company. SEBI checks that the applicant (or, for firms, the research analysts employed / partners engaged in research) is appropriately qualified & certified, is a fit and proper person, and has the infrastructure to carry on research.
Step 2 — Qualification & NISM certification
Under Regulation 7 (as amended w.e.f. 16 December 2024), the minimum qualification is either:
- a graduate degree or equivalent from a recognised university/institution, or a CFA Charter — plus relevant NISM certification; or
- a Post Graduate Program in the Securities Market (Research Analysis) from NISM (at least one year).
The December 2024 amendment lowered the base to a graduate degree in any discipline and removed the old "graduate + 5 years' experience" route. In practice you must pass NISM Series XV: Research Analyst certification (valid 3 years; renew via NISM Series XV-B before it expires).
Step 3 — The deposit (net worth is gone)
The old net-worth certificate has been replaced by a client-slab deposit, maintained as a Fixed Deposit lien-marked in favour of BSE Ltd (RAASB):
- Up to 150 clients — ₹1,00,000
- 151 to 300 clients — ₹2,00,000
- 301 to 1,000 clients — ₹5,00,000
- 1,001 clients & above — ₹10,00,000
Step 4 — Fees & documents (Form A)
SEBI fees:
- Individual / partnership firm / proxy adviser: application fee ₹2,000, registration fee ₹3,000 (first five years), then ₹1,000 every five years.
- Body corporate / LLP: application fee ₹20,000, registration fee ₹30,000, then ₹5,000 every five years.
- The application fee is paid with Form A; the registration fee on SEBI's approval.
RAASB (BSE) fees — separate from SEBI, and much larger for firms. On top of the SEBI fees, you pay the RAASB (administered by BSE) fee each five-year cycle, plus taxes: ₹9,000 for individuals/partnership firms and ₹4,95,000 for body corporates/LLPs. So the realistic first-cycle cost is small for an individual (SEBI ₹2,000 + ₹3,000 & RAASB ₹9,000 + GST) but roughly ₹5.5 lakh for a body corporate (SEBI ₹20,000 + ₹30,000 & RAASB ₹4,95,000 + GST) — a big reason many solo analysts register as individuals rather than a company.
Documents/information with Form A (First Schedule) typically include:
- General details — name, registered & correspondence address, principal place of business, phone/email, PAN, contact person, incorporation details, any existing SEBI/RBI/IRDAI/PFRDA registrations, associate concerns, and a write-up of activities.
- Legal structure and, for non-individuals, the shareholding/beneficial-ownership pattern with identity/address proof of the applicant/directors/partners/beneficial owners.
- Proof of Reg. 7 qualification & NISM certification of the research analysts/partners.
- For individuals — Income-Tax Returns / Form 16 for the last 3 years.
- Net-worth / net-tangible-asset details and the fit-and-proper declarations.
Step 5 — Apply on the RAASB portal → SEBI grants your certificate
- 1. File Form A with documents + application fee on the RAASB (BSE) portal: membershipraia.bseindia.com.
- 2. RAASB/SEBI examine your application (qualification, fit-and-proper, infrastructure); they may seek clarifications.
- 3. On approval and payment of the registration fee, SEBI grants the certificate of registration with your INH… registration number. The certificate is valid until suspended/cancelled — no separate renewal, but you must keep paying the applicable fee every five years.
How long does it take? There's no fixed statutory clock, but in practice registration typically takes anywhere from a few weeks to about 2–3 months, depending on how quickly you complete NISM Series XV and the deposit, and on any clarifications RAASB/SEBI seek on your Form A. Getting your documents and fit-and-proper declarations right the first time is the biggest time-saver.
Step 6 — Right after registration
Registration is the start line, not the finish. Immediately set up: using "Research Analyst" + your SEBI number in all client communication; (for non-individuals) appointing a compliance officer; a website with disclosures, Investor Charter and grievance/SCORES/SMART ODR; KYC/KRA, MITC, @valid UPI, FIU registration; and record-keeping (5 years) with an annual compliance audit.
