NSE Market LENS: a free stock screener every Research Analyst should try

NSE has quietly rolled out Market LENS (currently in Beta) — its own stock screener powered by NSE market data. It lets you filter 2,000+ NSE equities with a custom query builder and ready-made screens. For Research Analysts, it's a genuinely useful (and free) tool for idea generation — as long as you use it the right way.

What is NSE Market LENS?

Market LENS is NSE's in-house stock-screening and market-analytics platform. Think of a "Screener.in / Tickertape"-style tool, but built by the exchange itself and served from official NSE market data. You can search a stock or a sector, apply filters, and get a live, sortable table of matching companies. It's currently marked Beta and is free to use.

What it can do — the key features

Screen 2,000+Filter across 2,000+ NSE equity stocks with customizable conditions.
Query builderBuild your own query with AND / OR / NOT logic and > < >= <= thresholds — e.g. Market Cap > 500 AND P/E < 15. Ctrl+Enter to run.
Ratio GalleryPick from Valuation, Profitability, Growth, Price, P&L, Balance-Sheet and Cash-Flow metrics, plus Technical Indicators.
Popular ScreensReady-made screens like Growth at a Discount, Income + Safety, Momentum + Breakout, Quality & Safety, Value Growth and High Promoter Holding + High EPS Growth.
Browse by sectorJump straight into Banks, Pharma, IT, Power, Auto, Insurance and more.
Live columnsResults show market cap, 1D/1W/1M returns, volume, P/E, promoter holding and EPS — sortable, with unit toggles (Cr/Bn/Lakh).

How a Research Analyst can use it

  • Idea generation — start from a Popular Screen or build a quick query to shortlist candidates for deeper research.
  • Sector scans — quickly compare valuations, growth and promoter holding across a sector.
  • First-pass fundamentals — read P/E, EPS, market cap and returns at a glance before you open the annual report.
  • Cross-checking — sanity-check a number against NSE's own data source.
Compliance note for RAs: a screener is a starting point, not a recommendation. Under the SEBI (Research Analysts) Regulations you must have an adequate, research-supported documentary basis for every recommendation — so use Market LENS to shortlist and scan, then do your own diligence and keep your rationale on record. And because the tool is in Beta, always cross-verify any figure before you rely on it in a report.

Good to know

  • It's free and served from official NSE data (some ratios are sourced from Cogencis).
  • Beta means features and data can change — treat outputs as indicative until they mature.
  • It complements, rather than replaces, your existing research process and data sources.
